The Ganga Aarati at Dashashwamedh  Ghat is held everyday at 7 PM in summer and 6 or 5.30 PM in winter. This ceremony or ritual has become one of the most popular tourist attraction in Varanasi. The Ganga Aarati takes place at Dashashwamedh Ghat and also next to it at Prayag Ghat or Shitala Ghat. There are 7 priest performing the Ganga Aarati at Dashashwamedh Ghat and 5 priest at Prayag Ghat or Shitala Ghat. Apart from that, this aarati is performed at several different ghats of Varanasi nowadays. They now also perform aarati at Assi Ghat, Harischandra Ghat, Lalita Ghat and other ghats of Varanasi.

As this is  one of the major tourist attraction of Varanasi, a huge crowd gathers at all of the ghats of Banaras hence we recommend that you go there around 2 hours before the aarati starts.

The aarati last for around 40 minutes where you enjoy the vedic mantras, songs and Shiv Tandav Strotam ( Jatatavigalajjala pravahapavitasthale Galeavalambya lambitam bhujangatungamalikam Damad damad damaddama ninadavadamarvayam Chakara chandtandavam tanotu nah shivah shivam ). This Shiv Tandav Strotam is one of the most powerful mantras originated by Ravana.  This literally means that – With his neck consecrated by the flow of water that flows from his hair, And on his neck a snake, which is hung like a garland, And the Damaru drum that emits the sound “Damat Damat Damat Damat”, Lord Shiva did the auspicious dance of Tandava. May he give prosperity to all of us.

All  of these Ganga Aarati are managed and organized by Ganga Seva Nidhi and Gangotri Seva Samiti at Dashashwamedh Ghat. The Pandits or priest get paid by the organization and are very well trained for their occupation.
